A 20 year old Charley's Pacific Greenhouse gets a second life in Seattle

When Evan Wakefield and his husband were house hunting in Seattle, one listing stood out for a reason that had nothing to do with the kitchen. Tucked into the backyard was a 20 year old Cross Country Pacific greenhouse from Charley’s, and Evan knew right away it was the one.

“I wanted to see how big it was,” he says. “I’d never owned a greenhouse before, and it had always been my dream.”

The greenhouse had spent recent years as storage space, but the frame was still solid and the twinwall polycarbonate glazing was still doing its job, proof of just how well a Charley’s greenhouse is built to last. Evan brought it back to life and filled it with tropical plants he’d been growing for more than fifteen years. It didn’t take long for it to become something more than a growing space. Neighbors started stopping by. Friends came to see the collection. Conversations about plants turned into something bigger.

That spirit of sharing grew into Stem & Sound, a small plant business rooted in Evan’s love of gardening and his new home in the Pacific Northwest. Most of what he brings to pop ups and community markets traces back to the greenhouse behind his house.

When the original vent motors and shutters finally wore out, Evan reached out to Charley’s Greenhouse & Garden Supply. Using the greenhouse’s original specs, our team tracked down compatible replacements and shipped them straight to his door, so the greenhouse kept running through Seattle’s hottest months.

Twenty years in, this Charley’s greenhouse is still doing exactly what it was built to do: helping someone grow something of their own.
